Lamisil (Terbinafine) Information Resource Directory

Lamisil; Does it really work?

Lamisil is very effective in the treatment of fingernail and toenail fungus.  Lamisil is one of the few nail fungus treatments that actually works.  In my experience as a pharmacist, I have seen many people get good results with Lamisil on several occasions.

Other products make big promises, but nothing works as well or as fast as Lamisil.  Lamisil is not cheap, but it is worth every penny because of its effectiveness.

Lamisil is a powerful drug that kills fungus. Lamisil tablets are  indicated  for the treatment of toenail fungus or fingernail fungus.  The scientific name for nail fungus is " onychomycosis".

Unsightly fungal infections of the nails are very difficult to treat.  If you have toenail fungus  you know how ugly it looks.

You can't wear sandals or open toe shoes.  It's embarrassing to show your feet when you go swimming.  If you are dating (or if you are married) it can be a real turnoff to your partner.

Left untreated, the nails may cause discomfort  besides being unsightly and embarrassing.

The nail corrodes from the inside out because the fungus lives beneath the nail where it is hard to reach.

You need to know that fungus infection of the fingernails or toenails will not (ever) go away on its own.  If you don't treat the infection it will probably get worse or spread to your other nails.  This is why it is important to begin therapy early and nip it in the bud.

The nail shrivels up and becomes discolored taking on a greenish or gray-green color.  In the old days, before they had
Lamisil, if you got toenail fungus, the only thing they could do for you was to remove your toenails.  Nothing else worked.

[ My dad had toenail fungus in the 1980's.  The foot doctor removed all of his toenails.  It looks funny, but it hasn't impaired him in any way].

The problem is that the nail fungus doesn't live on the nail surface.
The fungus lives beneath the nail in the nail bed where there is a rich blood supply.  The nail fungus uses the nail as a protective shield.

Topically applied products (like liquids and creams) have difficulty penetrating the nail to reach the fungus cells and kill them.

That is why the topical products for nail fungus need to be applied for a long period of time (some require 48 weeks of application ) if they are to work properly if at all.

How do you take Lamisil?

Lamisil is available as a 250 mg tablet.  Lamisil  is usually taken once a day for 12 weeks for toenail fungus and 6 weeks for fingernail fungus.  You can take Lamisil with food or on an empty stomach.

Even though the fungus may appear to go away sooner than 12 weeks (or 6 weeks for fingernail fungus), it is important that you take it for a full 12 weeks (6 weeks for fingernail fungus) to make sure that you kill each and every fungus cell.

If you don't  take it for the full 12 weeks (6 weeks for fingernail fungus) the fungus may return and you have to start all over again.  All it takes is one little fungus cell to start the condition all over again.  Nail fungus is a very hardy fungus and very difficult to eradicate.

Lamisil Cost:

Brand name Lamisil is expensive.  Most people buy the generic version.  A month's supply of the generic Lamisil tablets costs about $30.00.  If you buy Brand name Lamisil over the internet from a reputable source such as Drugstore.com or RxUsa.com you can expect to pay about $14.00 per pill or about $4200.00 for each month of treatment.

There is a lot of competition between sites that sell generic Lamisil because it is expensive and popular.  This competition drives down the prices.  It is possible to get a better deal on generic Lamisil if you comparison shop.

Make sure that you are dealing with a reputable merchant.  Avoid merchants that not located in the United States or Canada.  Don't buy Lamisil from places like Asia, India or South America or the Caribbean.  These places have poor quality control and you can not be sure what you are getting if it gets to you at all.

Side Effects/ Adverse Reactions:

The most common side effects reported with Lamisil are gastrointestional disturbances (like stomach ache, diarrhea, nausea), alterations in liver test results, rashes and alterations in taste perception.  If you get any of these side effects, you need to tell your doctor at once.

Lamisil Warnings & Precautions:

Liver:

In rare instances, people who took Lamisil have developed a
sometimes fatal liver injury called "liver failure".

This is a serious condition.  Some of these people passed away or
required liver transplants.

The majority of people who developed liver failure while taking Lamisil had sick livers before they took any Lamisil.

Your doctor should test your liver function before he prescribes
Lamisil for you.  This is done with a simple blood test.

Also, your doctor should warn you to be on the lookout for symptoms
of liver failure such as persistent nausea, loss of appetite, tiredness,
vomiting, right upper abdominal pain, jaundice (a condition whereby
when your skin and eyeballs turn yellow), dark urine or pale stools.

For most people, the likelihood of having liver problems with Lamisil
is extremely rare.  That being said, you should only take Lamisil if it
is prescribed to you by a doctor or other healthcare professional.

Kidneys:

Lamisil should be used with caution in patients who have kidney
disease.  Patients who have a creatinine clearance of less than
50 ml/minute should not take Lamisil.  (Creatinine clearance is
a measure of kidney function).

If you try to obtain Lamisil on the internet, please make sure
that the person authorizing your prescription knows the
status of your liver function and your kidney function or you
may wind up hurting yourself.
It is a very foolhardy thing to take
Lamisil without being examined by a doctor.

Bottom Line: Lamisil is a strong medicine to treat toenail or fingernail
fungus.  Nothing is stronger or more effective than Lamisil to eradicate
toenail or fingernail.  It is expensive ( about $250.00 per month) but
it is worth every penny.
